If you only have two weeks to play with and want to visit the two most iconic cities in the States, this is the perfect plan for you. Split your time equally between the two coasts and immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of New York City before basking in the sunshine of Los Angeles.

When to Visit

Timing is crucial for your Bi-Coastal adventure. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, showcasing each city at its best. While summer brings longer daylight hours and a plethora of outdoor activities, be prepared for hot and humid weather and larger crowds. Consider starting your days early to beat the heat and crowds if visiting during summer.

How to Get Around

Flights between New York and Los Angeles are about 6 or 7 hours, so it is best to dedicate an entire day to travel when city hopping. Airlines that offer nonstop trips between the two cities include United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines (Alaska Airlines and JetBlue also have a few nonstop flights on their schedules).

I do not recommend driving across the country if you are only here for a couple of weeks. A drive from the East to the West Coast will take you at least 45 hours, which only accounts for the actual drive time.

Stop 1: New York City, New York

There’s nothing like landing in the US for the first time and seeing the New York City skyline. I recommend starting your trip here and exploring the city for 5 or 6 days.

Public transportation is plentiful, and I would not recommend renting a car. Between walking, taking the subway, and utilizing taxis and Uber, it should be easy to get around the city.

Stop 2: Los Angelas, California

Los Angeles is more widespread than New York City, making it more challenging to get around. If you want to see many popular attractions in the surrounding areas, renting a car upon arriving at LAX may be best.

Depending on how many days you want to spend on the East Coast, I recommend budgeting about a week in the Los Angeles area, especially if you hope to visit other cities (such as San Diego, Anaheim, Malibu, and Santa Barbara).

Itinerary #2 – The Four Corners

Are you ready to explore the unique intersection of four states in the American Southwest? The Four Corners itinerary offers a captivating journey through the diverse landscapes and cultures of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. From the majestic Grand Canyon to the ancient ruins of Mesa Verde, this itinerary promises an unforgettable adventure.

When to Visit

The best time to plan on doing The Four Corners itinerary is during the spring or fall months when the weather is mild and the crowds are thinner. Summer can be scorching in the desert regions, while winter brings cold temperatures and occasional snowfall, particularly at higher elevations.

How to Get Around

Given the vast distances between destinations and the remote nature of some attractions, renting a car is highly recommended for this itinerary. Having your own vehicle will provide flexibility and allow you to explore at your own pace. There is also not a good public transportation option for visiting these places, so renting a car is really the only way to enjoy this itinerary.

Stop 1: Phoenix, Arizona

Kickstart your journey in the vibrant city of Phoenix, known for its sunny weather and thriving arts scene. Spend a couple of days exploring the city’s attractions, from the Desert Botanical Garden to the Heard Museum, which showcases Native American art and culture. Phoenix also has a major airport (Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport), making it easy to start your trip by flying into this area and renting a car.

Stop 2: Sedona, Arizona

From Phoenix, make your way to the enchanting red rock landscapes of Sedona, just a scenic two-hour drive away. Spend a day or two immersing yourself in the natural beauty of this spiritual destination, known for its vortex sites and outdoor activities such as hiking, Jeep tours, and hot air balloon rides.

Stop 3: Four Corners Monument

After experiencing Sedona’s breathtaking beauty, continue your journey to the Four Corners Monument, the only point in the United States where the boundaries of four states—Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah—intersect. Here, you can stand in four states simultaneously (the only place in the US where this occurs). Definitely a cool experience and photo opportunity!

Stop 4: Durango, Colorado

From the Four Corners Monument, head east to the charming mountain town of Durango, Colorado, nestled in the scenic Animas River Valley. Explore the town’s historic downtown area, go whitewater rafting on the Animas River, or take a ride on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad through the breathtaking San Juan Mountains.

There is a small airport in Durango which may work depending on where you are headed. If this airport is less than ideal for you, I recommend continuing your trip into Colorado, where you can fly out of Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, or Denver. Alternatively, Albuquerque is the other major airport in close proximity.

Itinerary #3 – Yankee Doodle

The spring and fall months may be the most enjoyable time to visit these spots, especially if you plan to see the Cherry Blossoms in DC (which I highly recommend). Summer can be hot and humid in some areas, while winter brings colder temperatures, particularly in the northern states.

How to Get Around

Public transportation, such as trains and buses, is readily available between the major cities on the East Coast, making it convenient to navigate this itinerary without needing to rent a car. Within cities, walking and using public transit systems like subways and buses are efficient ways to get around. Depending on whether you add additional stops to this itinerary, it may be time-efficient and cost-effective to fly between cities.

Stop 1: Boston, Massachusetts

Begin your journey in Boston, the birthplace of the American Revolution and a city steeped in history. Spend a few days exploring iconic landmarks such as the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, and the USS Constitution Museum. Don’t forget to indulge in some fresh seafood at the historic Quincy Market.

Stop 2: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

From Boston, travel southwest to Philadelphia, the birthplace of American democracy and home to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Spend a couple of days exploring the historic district and visiting iconic sites such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Reading Terminal Market. You can take a train, bus, or plane to travel between these two cities. You could also rent a car, but I do not recommend this as parking is limited and expensive in these historic cities.

Continue your journey south to the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., where history comes alive at every turn. Spend several days exploring the Smithsonian museums, touring the iconic monuments and memorials on the National Mall, and soaking in the vibrant cultural scene of the city. How to Get Around

The best, and possibly only, way to explore Wyoming is by renting a car. The parks and attractions in the area are remote and somewhat far from one another, so having a car allows you to travel from place to place easily.

Stop 1: Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Begin your adventure in the world’s first national park, Yellowstone. Explore a wonderland of geothermal wonders, pristine wilderness, and abundant wildlife as you wander along boardwalks, hike scenic trails, and marvel at iconic landmarks like Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring.

California boasts a mild climate year-round, so you can ultimately visit any time you like, though the more northern areas will get cold in the wintertime. I recommend a summertime trip to California to really take advantage of all the state has to offer. The months of May through September will provide the most optimal weather.

How to Get Around:

Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore these destinations, giving you the flexibility to navigate at your own pace and explore off-the-beaten-path locations. However, public transportation options are available in major cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, and guided tours are available for wine tasting in Napa Valley.

Stop 1: San Francisco, California

The Petrified Forest is home to one of the most extensive collections of petrified wood in the world.
